Mountain Men Inc. was established in 2018 by our founding board of volunteers (pictured below). Our founding board came together to create a community group that provided men across the Dandenong Ranges with the opportunity to make and build new friendships in a safe, inclusive environment that tailored to all men regardless of any actual or perceived 'difference.' The research demonstrates that men often find it difficult to make and maintain new friendships beyond schooling and, that men are continued to be over-represented in statistics pertaining to poor mental health, suicide and violence. Our founding board wanted to create opportunities for men to establish meaningful connections with one another, where there was an onus on help-seeking behaviours; encouraging support among members and, creating partnerships with other services and agencies in the local area to be able to link men in with professional support when and where required. In our first two years, Mountain Men went from eight volunteers to a membership base into the hundreds, with a wide variety of programs and events running each week, including information seminars on men's health, games nights, fitness/running clubs, lawn bowls evenings, rotating working bees on members properties, Dads and kids days, and more. Mountain Men attracted significant local support, including funding from Yarra Ranges Council and we continue to build upon our standing in the local community to this day.
